When the idea of having our own log home began to take shape, the decisive push came from an unexpected source: a recommendation from a colleague. The starting point for designing the home was clear: functionality, light, and making full use of the plot and its orientations. The location was far from easy—slopes and exposed rock—but it was seen as an opportunity, not an obstacle. Rantasalmi embraced the challenge. The structural design and floor plans were refined so the house would anchor naturally into the landscape while framing the best views of the lake. “It was important to us that the house fits the plot, not the other way around,” says client Pasi Arkko.
The house’s dark exterior anchors it to the sloped plot and surrounding trees, with the tone framing the windows and giving the architecture a calm, rhythmic presence. Inside, the atmosphere shifts to light, sun-reflecting timber. The pale-treated logs create a continuous flow from room to room, while natural light gently washes across the walls. The desire for “logs that don’t crack” guided the design, leading to the choice of non-settling timber. “Non-settling timber is also durable and precise. It’s a very technical decision, but its effect is felt in every room, creating a finished, harmonious result,” the client explains.
Window wall that turns the landscape into part of the home
The heart of the home is the large space formed by the kitchen and living room, where a floor-to-ceiling window wall frames the lake view. “The view is a daily source of joy. The windows bring the landscape so close that you can feel the seasons inside."
The modern, clean-lined kitchen is designed for everyday life: the island brings cooking and socializing together, while integrated appliances keep the look calm and uncluttered. The entryway and utility room are planned with practicality in mind—storage is hidden in custom cabinetry, and circulation flows logically. The living room fireplace anchors the space, and its glow makes the open room feel cozy even during the darker months.
According to the owners, the experience of living in the log home is “good and natural.” The house breathes evenly, the acoustics are pleasant, and the indoor air feels fresh. The light wood surfaces and large glass panels make the space feel airy without losing warmth.

The project’s most important insight was simple but crucial: considering the plot and its orientations from the very start pays off every day—in light, views, and functionality. “When these elements are right, everything else can be built more easily on their foundation,” the client summarizes.
